How Do You Work at Home Without Paid Childcare?
When I do not have a sitter, the bulk of my work gets done while my son is asleep. I'm also lucky because he loves to read, and will sit for hours with a book.
Of course, this didn't happen overnight--he used to be the kind of kid who would need my constant attention. But with time, and with my patient encouragement, he began to naturally gravitate toward spending more time on his own. Having your child develop a love of reading certainly helps, as does a natural move toward further independence that comes with age.
How Do You Keep Kids Busy While You Work?
Reading! I make sure he's stocked with the mystery and suspense books that he loves. Occasionally -- and I admit to having to do this when he was little -- a DVD. And Legos are a working mom's best friend.
Tips and Tricks
- Be patient. If your child doesn't like to do too much on his own, try to keep in mind that he will naturally move toward spending more time without your constant attention. And when that stage in his development happens, you will be sad!
- Yes, it's important to get your work done. But you know what's just as important? Playing or cuddling or reading with your child. Those are things that he will remember.
- Get over your guilt. If your child expresses unhappiness that you aren't playing with him all the time, remind him that you need time to do things that make you who you are (and can earn money for your home).
