Use a Kitchen Timer
Work-at-Home Mom Tip #16

By , About.com Guide

Waiting is never easy for kids. But when kids understand there will be an end to their wait (preferable very soon), they are more patient. This is why an ordinary kitchen timer is an invaluable tool for a work at home mom.

Help kids quantify that wait by taking the timer out of the kitchen (or better yet just get a new one for your office). When very young children are clamoring for your attention while you work, give them something to do and set the timer for a short amount of time. "You play with blocks by yourself for 15 minutes and then Mommy will play with you for 15 minutes." Then the time the next time you set the timer gradually increase the amount of time.

For older kids, use the timer to set an ending time for activities, like TV viewing or video games, that you don't want them to spend all day doing. Or use it to rotate toys or games between kids.
