When my oldest was a fickle toddler and losing interest in all her toys, my mother advised me to put away some toys for a short period of time. And when they reappeared in her play room, they would seem like new to her. Sure enough she was right. With a toddler the toys only had to be out of sight for a few days before they became fascinating again. So when you keep some toys in your home office, put some in plain sight and stow some out of sight for when you child gets bored.
Over the years, I have found that this approach works well with older kids too. Though it's tougher to hide their toys, older kids often lose them, and many toys fall naturally out of rotation by sliding under the bed or getting put away on a high shelf. When a school snow day or other day when you really need to keep them busy, think back and suggest a toy you haven't seen in a while. It may be a big hit!
