Finding a work-at-home job can seem daunting at first, particularly for moms who may already have a very full life. But when trying to make the shift to a work at home job, the first thing to consider is whether you can telecommute your current job. If the answer is no, you may want to start thinking about moving your career in a different direction.

Whether you want to be a telecommuter or independent contractor, these work at home jobs lend themselves well to a home office environment and in particular to moms. They can be full or part time, and they fit into the busy rhythm of a household with children.

Writing is an extremely versatile career. There are countless types of writing jobs and most can be done as work at home jobs, both as a telecommuter and a freelancer. While may writers do have to work during business hours, often much of the work can be done late at night when kids are sleeping.

Work at Home Transcriptionist

Both medical and legal fields use transciptionists. Typing is obviously a key skill, but accuracy and grammar skills are important as well. Transcriptionists are paid by the line typed or by the hour. Work at home transcriptionists are usually independent contractors. Medical transcriptionists convert doctors' dictated notes from each patients’ visit into typed medical records. Medical transcriptionists must complete a one-year diploma program. Like writing most--but not all--of the work can be done during non-business hours.

Similar to teaching/tutoring in terms of skills, but entirely different in terms of scope is a home daycare. Unlike tutors that give lessons of 30 or 60 minutes, home daycare providers use large portions of their homes for extended periods of time. Yet both require a love of working with children.
