Wooden Doll Houses

These classic toys never go out of style.

By

There’s nothing like a wooden doll houses for inspiring nostalgia in mom and hours of play for kids. My girls had an Ikea wooden doll house. It wasn’t classic--in the sense that it was a very modern-looking townhouse--but it was a good old-fashioned toy with tons of imaginative play potential. I'd say I liked it as much as the girls because it was easily portable, it was two pieces (which meant it could reside in two different rooms), and it was a flat-roof townhouse, just like our house. Of all the toys, only the train sets got more playtime than that old doll house.

I don’t know if Ikea still makes it, but I have put together a list of wooden doll houses--both classic and modern--that could encourage hours of fantasy role-playing in your kids. Maybe one of them looks like your house!

OK, I don’t think anyone’s house looks quite like this one, but this sure looks like fun. This mod, eco-friendly home features a wind turbine, solar cell panel, rain barrel, a green façade, shade canopy and recycle bins. All that good stuff makes it a great learning toy for older kids, but the openness of the design makes it easy for little hands to get in it and play with the included furniture for the living room, kitchen, bathroom, children’s room and master bedroom. At approximately 21.5" x 17" x 24" (LxDxH),it’s also more portable than some of the other wooden doll houses on the list.

This may be as close as I can find to my girls’ townhouse doll house, but at nearly 4 feet in height it is not exactly portable. But for many parents (who don’t live in a 12-foot wide rowhouse) that’s not necessarily an issue. It’s large enough that multiple children can play together. And don’t let the colorful façade fool you, it is sturdy wood construction. It comes with 11 pieces of furniture, including a bed, couch, bathtub, sink, and table and chairs. Measures 33.5” x 13.5” x 45.5".

Manufacturer recommended age: 3 - 12 years

This one features the same open design as the Green Doll House by Plan Toys (above), but it doesn’t have all the eco-friendly features. However, these doll houses are made from recycled rubberwood that is not chemically treated. What I like about this one--besides the fact that it not pink--is that is actually two pieces can be rearranged in various ways according to children's imagination or even kept in two different rooms. Comes with furniture for five rooms. Measures 30.7" x 14.2" x 23.6" (together).

This one really leaves it up to your child’s imagination, but that’s what it’s all about, right? These three-story wooden doll houses feature a very open design and a handle on top for carrying. (It weighs 12 ½ pounds and measures a little over two feet tall.) It’s made of hardwood with rounded edges for safe play. Measures approximately 24" x 14" x 28".
