Kids’ Activities Series: Listening to Music

By , About.com Guide

Listening to music is one of many kids’ activities that needs little adult help and is fun. While not necessarily an activity that stands alone, listening to music while doing other kids' activities (i.e. playing with toys, art) extends the time children stay engaged.

Age range: Infants & up
Number of children: Any
Type of activity: fun for one, music, indoor activity

Description:

Play music that your children enjoy while they are playing with toys, drawing or even resting (especially for those in the process of dropping their naps). Music also keeps them in the place where the music is playing, rather than wandering around the house looking for a new stimulating activity.

Playing music can also drown out other sound in the household that might be potential distractions (doorbell, dog barking, garbage truck, etc.) to their independent play or quiet time.

Preparation:

A stationary CD player is a great tool for work at home moms because it helps keep children who are listening to music or an audio book in one place. But MP3 players or other portable listening device are useful too. Burn CDs or make play list of your child's favorite music. Or find a radio station they like (satellite radio has many kid friendly options).

Keep in Mind:

Most kids will not simply listen to music alone. It needs to be paired with another independent play activity. And it may not be good when listening is part of the other activity. For some music can be a distraction when reading or concentrating, although others find it makes focusing easier.
