This time of year when there are long car trips on the horizon or boring stops at elderly relatives homes, kids need something portable to keep their minds and hands busy. And if that something doesn't beep, buzz or lose its charge, well, all the better.

When they're cooped up in the car, have them exercise their minds with some brainteasers. Either try hands-on brainteaser games, or get some brainteaser and riddle books. The great thing about these books is that--as with these wordless books too-- kids don't necessarily have to know how to read yet to enjoy ones like hidden pictures, I Spy, mazes, dot-to-dots, etc.
