The idea behind this "Good Toys" blog series is to highlight toys that help mom get some work done. So I know that music doesn't exactly sound like a great activity for a work-at-home mom's family. Do you want your toddler banging a drum when you're on business call?
However, music can have it's place in your household if you find the right music toys for the little ones and then get older ones some musical instruction. Music can be an engrossing activity rather than just background noise.
In our house, music is a constant. Music lessons and musical toys over the years mean my kids can create their own music at will, plus they love to listen to it. And while the tinkle of the piano doesn't always sound that good while they are learning a song, I've situated the piano far enough from my office and distributed headphones to everyone (myself included), so that it doesn't disturb me while I'm working.
As I recount in this blog, I have spent a lot of money on music lessons--not because I knew it would keep the kids busy while I worked but because my kids and I love music. Not everyone is going to want to make this kind of investment. But trying out a few of the musical toys on my list of good toys for kids is a good way to gauge your families interest in music.
