Good Toys: Train Sets

Follow me on:

Thomas the Tank Engine"I Love Toy Trains"

That was the name of a video we once owned. It was well liked by my train-loving son, but it really didn't measure up to his Thomas the Tank Engine videos. But its title certainly revealed a basic truth about my son.

He would set up elaborate Thomas the Tank Engine layouts that ran from room to room, and then he'd mimic the bickering trains for hours. He loved Thomas, and so did I. I loved how Thomas trains ignited both his imagination and his engineering talent.

And so on this Black Friday, I'm choosing train sets in my  blog series in which I highlight what I consider good toys for WAHMs' kids.

But before Thomas came along, my son loved Toots, though it was one of my biggest toy-purchase mistakes.  This was not a good toy.

The electric engine weighed enough to crush little toes, and it had two volume settings--loud and louder. In an unnaturally perky-yet-electronic voice, it would repeat incessantly "Whoo, whoo! I'm Toots the Train." Impossible to get any work done with Toots around!

But trains can be a work-at-home moms best friend. Boys and girls (my youngest daughter loved Thomas too) will build and rebuild track set-ups while mom works. But you do have to find the right train set for your child or you too could have Toots merrily steaming through your office.

Plus an added bonus for train sets this time of year is that they make good Christmas decorations for kids to set up (and then play with)!

I´m getting by just fine with good old fashioned Lego bricks and a book (especially those with big pictures of animals) every now and then so far… Although a train might be a good idea too. My brother also used to spend hours with it as a kid.
