Unlike snow days these one-day school holidays, like Election Day, are no surprise. They've likely been on your family calendar since the first day of school. But that doesn't mean you've got a plan for them. I know I don't.
Yesterday morning, my planning was grandiose. (Maybe we'll got to the Smithsonian!) Today, after two new freelance jobs came in yesterday afternoon, my ideas are simpler. (Let's bake brownies.)
I do plan to bring my child to the polling place when I vote (though know the rules about children in the polling place in your state before you do the same).
I have very clear memories of going with my parents to vote. Politically speaking, my father always wore his heart on his sleeve, and his excitement on Election Day was always infectious. It felt like such a privilege to be going along on my parents' important mission. I hope my kids feel the same way because it still seems like a privilege to me.
